Blackjack Basics

Blackjack is played between the player and the dealer, with the goal of getting a hand value as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. The game is typically played with one or more decks of standard playing cards.

Card Values:

• Number cards (2-10) are worth their face value.
• Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10 points each.
• Aces can be worth either 1 or 11, depending on which benefits the hand more.

How to Play Blackjack

1. Place Your Bet – Players place their wagers before the dealer deals the cards.
2. Receive Cards – Each player and the dealer receive two cards. The dealer has one card face-up and one face-down (the "hole card").
3. Player Decisions – Based on the total value of their cards, players can take one of the following actions:
   • Hit – Take another card to try and improve the hand.
   • Stand – Keep the current hand and end the turn.
   • Double Down – Double the initial bet and receive only one additional card.
   • Split – If dealt two cards of the same value, split them into two separate hands and place an additional bet.
   • Surrender – In some versions of blackjack, players can forfeit half their bet and end the round.
4. Dealer's Turn – Once all players have finished their actions, the dealer reveals their hole card and follows a set of fixed rules:
   • The dealer must hit if their total is 16 or lower.
   • The dealer must stand if their total is 17 or higher.
5. Winning the Game – The player wins if they:
   • Have a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding 21.
   • The dealer busts (goes over 21).
   • Get a natural blackjack (an Ace and a 10-value card) while the dealer does not.

Blackjack Strategy Tips

• Always stand on 17 or higher.
• Hit if your hand is 11 or lower.
• Double down when you have 10 or 11 and the dealer has a lower total.
• Never take insurance; it's a high house-edge bet.
• Know when to split: Always split Aces and 8s but never split 10s or 5s.
